A letter from Barry Glover to Scott Brown

Scott E. Brown became, in many ways, an unofficial member of our family. He entered our lives in the early 1990s, when Maestra Marin Alsop expressed interest in our grandfather’s symphonic works. His enthusiasm for our patriarch was infectious, and his sincerity was immediately clear…gaining hi a high mark in “mom approval”.

From that moment forward, Scott walked the talk he preached.  After meeting the family, fresh from his initial book release on granddad, Scott determined he must rewrite the work to introduce the new insights he gained into granddad’s story which began a 25 year plus journey in the making.

This book is the culmination of decades of dedication to the life story of an American icon, our grand and great grandfather, James P Johnson. Yes, I may be biased to the degree of being one of Johnson’s grandsons, this aside, I see Scott’s lifelong journey into who our grandfather was as a journey of love.  The love that springs and comes from the genuineness that burns when one finds a human connection to a passion.

Probably somewhere between a thematic and intellectual autobiography, this presentation by Dr. Scott E. Brown is a true factual reflection of our grandfathers’ professional arc and opens to you, the reader, a legacy we are extremely proud of carrying forward.

Thank you Scott,

Warm regards,

Barry J Glover, grandson
